Explore the green highlights around the city by bike (circular bike tour, not signposted).

The region around the town of Nienburg has a lot to offer in terms of climate protection and sustainability. On the "Climate Tour" there are great examples of nature conservation, sustainable energy production, regional nutrition and the protection of biodiversity - and of course all of this is completely CO2-neutral by bike.

The cycle tour with stops at the city garden on the Weser, the still water "Die Rolle", the pond area "Haaken Werder", the Holtorf wind power plant and the "Naturnahen Schau- und Lehrgarten" of BUND also leads to Kräher Höhe, the highest point in Nienburg. The former landfill site has been transformed into an idyllic resting place. At the very top, in addition to a small hut where you can linger and enjoy the unique view over Nienburg, there is even a real summit cross and four disc golf frisbee baskets.

The Frischehof Krumwiede, the only farm store in the city, is also interesting. With its varied assortment of seasonal vegetables, milk, eggs, local fruit and meat and sausage products, it is an ideal stop on the tour.
The route leads through the northern and southern parts of the city and is a great excursion into the countryside for both locals and tourists.

The Nienburg Climate Tour can also be found at Komoot.

Directions

Station 1: Stadtgarten an der Weser (corner of Mühlenstraße 20)
The Stadtgarten an der Weser is a project of the Diakonisches Werk in the Nienburg church district and attracts many guests from April to October with its magnificent flowers. Depending on the time of year, various projects are carried out here that promote biodiversity and invite people to get involved and help shape the garden. People garden, harvest and work together here. The aim is to raise visitors' awareness of regional plant and vegetable species. The creation of flowering meadows in the urban area is also extremely important to create habitats for bees and bumblebees in particular. You can also find out how to do this in the city garden.

Station 2: Still water "Die Rolle" & Storchenteiche
Visit the former sand and gravel quarry "Die Rolle". The shores offer protection and resting areas for water birds, but swimming and surfing are also possible here. From the shore you can discover a small island; this is solely for bird protection and may not be entered. Overall, "Die Rolle" is of great importance as a breeding and resting area for birdlife and is therefore indispensable as a nature reserve.
Your path continues past the stork ponds; the endangered white stork regularly settles here.

Station 3: "Haaken Werder" & Goseteich
These idyllic pond areas are former sand, gravel and clay extraction areas in the Weser Marsh. They have now developed into secondary biotopes with shallow waters and marshy shore zones. Numerous protection and rest areas have been created here as part of the renaturation and provide an ideal habitat for many breeding and resting birds, including the strictly protected pond bat. The ponds are also perfect as a fishing and recreational area and are maintained by the Nienburg Angling Club. Haaken Werder and the Goseteich are perfect examples of sustainability, as terrestrial ecosystems are protected here and their sustainable use promoted.

Station 4: Holtorf wind turbine
This 65-metre-high wind turbine was built in 2002 and is the only one in the Nienburg urban area. The plant has an output of approx. 1.8 MW and can supply around 560 households with electricity with its annual production of approx. 2 million kWh. It therefore saves around 775 tons of CO2 and is a great example of sustainable energy generation in the urban area.

OPTIONAL: Station 5: Kräher Höhe - the highest point in Nienburg
The area was recultivated and redesigned between 2009 and 2011: The landfill became the "Kräher Höhe" local recreation area. Around 1.2 million cubic meters of municipal waste were recycled into a hiking trail. Careful treatment of nature, careful use of resources, waste avoidance and recycling are the themes here. On the way to the summit plateau, you will learn lots of interesting facts about modern waste management. Once at the top, you can enjoy the fantastic view over the Mittelweser valley, take a break at the small mountain hut or read the "living sundial". The hiking trail is open at all times.

Station 6: Frischehof Krumwiede
The Frischehof Krumwiede is definitely worth a visit. In the only farm store in the city, you will find a varied range of seasonal vegetables, milk, eggs, local fruit, meat and sausage products. Naturally, care is taken to avoid packaging and to ensure regional origin, as short transportation routes mean that significantly less climate-damaging CO2 is released. Regional wines, liqueurs, oils and homemade jams and specialty preserves made according to grandma's recipe can also be found in the range. If the store is not open, there is a self-service vending machine in the courtyard. This is always stocked with fresh regional delicacies.

Station 7: Natural show and educational garden
In the natural show and educational garden of the BUND Nienburg district group, you will find a variety of native flowers, herbs and vegetable plants. The aim is to familiarize the public with the design and cultivation principles of a near-natural garden. Awareness of the regional plant world is to be promoted and the value of a near-natural garden as a varied and attractive space for play and discovery is also to be conveyed to children and young people. The garden is lovingly cared for without the use of pesticides, artificial fertilizers and peat, but by means of closed-loop compost management. The economical use of water and energy and the construction of insect hotels and bee boxes to preserve and protect biodiversity are also demonstrated here. Opening hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., during the summer vacations additionally on Sundays from 2.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m.
