Off the main paths

The landscape features of the Middle Weser region are diverse: expansive geest areas with beautiful forests and colorful fields, extensive moor and heathland regions shape the scenery. Moors are drained and re-wet, and quarrying has created lake landscapes. Peaceful and idyllic, nature-rich spots are perfect for taking a breath, and at the same time, the flora and fauna are exciting to observe. Experience the Middle Weser region on foot, by bike, on horseback, on the water during a boat trip, or by canoe.

Dinosaur footprints

It must have been approximately 130 million years ago when a herd of dinosaurs roamed the North German Plain. During their walk, they left mighty footprints in the mud. More than 300 "footprints" can be admired at the Dinosaur Park Münchehagen. A two-and-a-half-kilometer-long circular trail guides visitors through different geological periods and showcases the evolutionary history of these fascinating giant reptiles with over 300 life-sized reconstructions.

White storks

Every spring, the arrival of white storks is eagerly awaited in the Middle Weser region. By May, the large birds return to their nests. While some pairs are just beginning to breed, others already have small stork heads peeking over the nest edge. With around 20 breeding pairs, Petershagen is not only the stork capital of North Rhine-Westphalia but also home to the Stork Museum, which highlights the cultural and historical significance of storks.

After the last Ice Age, large parts of the North German Plain developed into moors due to high groundwater levels. Extensive raised bogs are among the outstanding landscape features of the southern Middle Weser region (Great Moor Uchte, High Moor near Steyerberg, Rehburger Moor, Lichtenmoor). In the core area, large-scale industrial peat extraction still takes place. However, today, many areas have already been returned to nature.

Up on the water

Kanu auf der Weser

The Weser, as the lifeline of the region, meanders through the land in strong curves. A interplay of river and lake landscapes, forests, and moors shapes the scenery of the area. In earlier times, the waters were used for fishing, powering numerous watermills, or as transportation routes. Today, they offer a variety of water sports and leisure activities. It doesn't matter whether you prefer to fish peacefully or go on a boat trip with friends. There are also ideal conditions for motorboat enthusiasts and canoe tours.
