Nienburg was a fortress and garrison town, always military. Danes, Swedes, imperial troops and soldiers from France, Russia and Great Britain were quartered here.
Until the end of the 18th century, moats, ramparts, gates and drawbridges were intended to protect the inhabitants from raids and conquest. Remains and traces of the fortifications can still be seen today. Take a walk along the former ramparts to see how citizens and sovereigns tried - albeit not always successfully - to make the town a safe place. Get an idea of what the Weser Gate, Kuhschanze and Bastion looked like when they were still equipped with cannons.
