Historical structure
The town was built on flood-protected dune terrain in the triangle between the Weser and Aue rivers
To protect against attacks, a moat was dug from the Weser to the Aue (Meerbach), so that the village was completely surrounded by water. After the fortress was razed during the French period in 1808, the moat was gradually filled in. A remnant of the former moat between the Weser and Aue can still be seen. The Albert Schweitzer School, formerly a Latin school and now home to one of Nienburg's two grammar schools, is located on this remaining part of the site.
