The sculpture "Madonna of Chernobyl" shows a stylized female figure, a pregnant woman, sitting on the shattered globe. The artwork addresses the 1986 nuclear reactor accident in Chernobyl (Ukraine) and its consequences for people and the environment.
The sculpture was erected on Mayor Stahn Wall to mark Chernobyl Day on April 26, 2000. Since then, the start of the commemoration of the Chernobyl accident has taken place there every year, and the Belarusian population still suffers severely from the ecological consequences of the accident today.
