The ramparts were built in the early Middle Ages. They are almost completely enclosed by a natural steep slope. The inner area is now home to the Forsthaus Heiligenberg hotel restaurant. When the ramparts were built, the steep slope at the confluence of two streams was used. Only the last third of the fortification was protected by a rampart and a low rampart.
In 1217, the Premonstratensian Order received the ramparts as a gift from Count Gebhard von Wernigerode. The order built its monastery complex on the rampart. After the dissolution of the monastery in 1543, the buildings were completely looted.
