The Weser flows through Nienburg on its way north. This tour deals with the Weser river, shipping, Weser bridges, bog oaks, Weser stones, fishing, the harbor and swimming in the river.
The Weser originates in Hann. Münden from the confluence of the Werra and Fulda rivers. It is 477 kilometers long until it flows into the North Sea. As the Upper Weser, it flows through the Weserbergland in the Upper Weser Valley to Porta Westfalica. From Porta Westfalica, a breakthrough valley near the town of the same name, the Weser flows through the North German Plain. At the northern edge of Minden, the Weser is crossed by the Mittelland Canal. From this waterway junction, it is referred to as the Middle Weser according to the definition of the Waterways and Shipping Administration. To ensure that fully loaded ships have enough "water under the keel" at all times of the year, the Mittelweser is dammed on various sections. The water level between Bremen and Minden is regulated by seven barrages. Over 150 kilometers, 40 meters of height are overcome. The section of the river from the Hemelinger Weser weir in Bremen to the mouth into the North Sea is subject to the tides and is called the Lower Weser.
