Verden's town hall was first mentioned in a document in 1330. 400 years later, in 1729/30, the town replaced the dilapidated half-timbered house with a new Baroque building.
In the following years, the town hall was rebuilt several times and extensions were added. In 1903-1905, the striking tower, visible from afar, was built in the historicist style. The entrance to the town hall forecourt had already been relocated in 1875.

Until the 19th century, the administration was located on the upper floor of the building. The first floor and the vaulted cellar served as the council cellar.

The square in front of the town hall was not only a marketplace but also a place where justice was dispensed. A stake of shame and a Roland statue were located there.
