Directions
Coming from Verden, there are two opportunities to cross the Weser to reach Thedinghausen via the alternative route. First, over the Intscheder weir or later with the "Gentsiet" ferry (May-October). On the main route, the cycle path runs past the Langwedel lock canal by the Romanesque St. Sigismund Church in Daverden towards Achim. Just before Achim lies Etelsen, known for its castle. Built in 1886 in the Neo-Renaissance style, it now serves as a seminar center for the Lower Saxony Education Institute. As early as 1873, Conrad Wilhelm Hase built the neo-Gothic mausoleum in the castle park. This was modernized around 1900 by Friedrich Kreiß. There is always something happening at the castle! Summer concerts, exhibitions, theater performances, readings, singing performances, and civil weddings.
A few kilometers further you reach the Badener Berge in Achim-Baden, from which there is a magnificent view. According to legend, the pirate Klaus Störtebeker once hid here. Your route now leads over the Weser bridge to Thedinghausen or you take the alternative route on the right Weser side past the Achim windmill and the city center of Achim to Bremen. Achim derives from "Acheim", meaning "place by the water." Charming, between modernity and old architecture, is the pedestrian zone of the 30,000-inhabitant town, where fresh products traditionally arrive at the weekly market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Worth seeing are, among others, the Clüverhaus, St. Laurentius Church, and the gatehouse.
The Erbhof Castle in Thedinghausen is one of the outstanding examples of Weser Renaissance in the Middle Weser region. Archbishop Johann Friedrich - then ruler of the Archdiocese of Bremen and thus also of the Amt Thedinghausen - had it built for his lover, the young widow of the archiepiscopal Drosten of Hermeling, Gertrud von Hermeling-Heimbruch, in 1619/20. Since 1999, the Samtgemeinde Thedinghausen has been the owner of this architectural and cultural-historical jewel. The Erbhof, with its Renaissance hall, has been completely renovated in recent years. Various events are offered, and civil weddings are possible. Next door, a tree park covering almost 11 hectares has been created, where around 450 species and varieties in 71 genera have been planted. Explore Thedinghausen on the "Thähnuser Löwenspur." Get to know the town hall ensemble with the pigeon tower, the former district court, the Herzog Wilhelm monument, and the Maria Magdalena Church. From Thedinghausen, the Weser cycle path leads to Dreye in the municipality of Weyhe. Visit the privately operated Weyher Theater at the market square in Kirchweyhe. At the station area, there is a museum steam locomotive from 1942 that recalls Weyhe's railway history. The "Wieltsee" yacht harbor is the largest marina in the Middle Weser region. Passing the Werdersee, the path leads directly into the city center of the Hanseatic city of Bremen.
