The Weser is dammed up here. Ships can overcome the difference in height through the lock. It is one of six barrages on the Middle Weser that regulate the flow of water.
The Drakenburg barrage consists of a weir built between 1953 and 1956, an integrated small lock and a hydroelectric power station. A boat trolley is available for canoeists. The associated Drakenburg lock for Weser shipping is located in a lock canal that shortens several river loops.
A run-of-river power station was built at the same time as the weir and has been in operation since 1955. The hydropower plant was originally operated by the company PreußenElektra, which later merged into the EON Group. As a result of a share swap with the Norwegian energy group Statkraft, the latter has owned and operated the power plant since January 1, 2009.
