The Robert Frank power plant went into operation in 1962. It was named after Robert Frank (1879-1961), a member of the first PreussenElektra board of directors from 1927 to 1933 and subsequently a member of the boards of other companies such as RWE.
PreussenElektra built the power plant after natural gas was discovered in the Weser-Ems region in the 1950s. From there, the gas is transported to the power plant via a 50 km long pipeline that crosses under the Weser. A little further north, the Landesbergen barrage was put into operation in 1960. This allowed the waste heat to be removed with water from the dammed Weser. The remaining chimney is 181 m high.
