The chapter house is the oldest secular building in the district of Verden. It dates back to the 13th century and was completely renovated in 1989.
Since 2019, it has been a regional museum, exhibition and research site for the history of the region.
The aim is to give local history a face and create a link between the past and present. The Kapitelhaus archive is open to the public. The foundation stone for a history workshop was laid in 2015 under the motto "Discovering our history - Kirchlinteln network". The association Zeitgeschichtliche Werkstatt im Kapitelhaus zu Wittlohe e.V. is part of a network of remembrance culture in the district of Verden.
In the late Middle Ages, the chapter house with its cellar was the structural court of the church chapter, it was a tax collection point and functioned as a court of law for a good two hundred years after the Reformation. In more recent times, it was a prison, refugee accommodation, wash house and bakery.
