In 1966, old town scenes for the British anti-war film "How I won the war" (1967) were filmed in Verden under the direction of Richard Lester. John Lennon, singer of the Beatles, was also involved. Filming locations included Spain, the Bergen military training area, Achim and Verden. Among other things, a row of houses in the street "Mühlentor" in the old town of Verden, which can be seen in the film, was filmed. The monument, which commemorates this important event for Verden, now stands in this street with the cul-de-sac to the Aller.
How did the monument come about? In 2006, the special exhibition "John Lennon - a Beatle in Verden" took place in the German Horse Museum. The occasion was the 40th anniversary of the filming. Donations from visitors, private individuals and companies made it possible to realize the monument. Two years later, the unveiling of the John Lennon memorial in Verden took place at the original location.
Metal plates are attached to three concrete steles. One plate shows a John Lennon sketch with a few lines by Uwe Blaschke: typical nickel glasses, helmet, dove of peace and film reel. This is a reference to the movie "How I won the war". Another tells of the film event in Verden and the third names the sponsors.
