Water mill
Industrial monument
The watermill in Stemmen was first mentioned in documents in the 11th century, making it the oldest documented watermill in the district of Verden.
The building with the idyllic mill pond is located on the Lehrde, a small tributary of the Aller.

In 1231, the cathedral chapter of Verden bought the mill. This made it a hereditary interest mill of the Verden bishops, i.e. part of the income had to be paid to the church. In 1718 it is called "the royal water mill on the Leere" (Lehrde). In the middle of the 18th century, the mill passed into private ownership.

The current four-storey brick main mill building was built in 1898 in the historicist style typical of an industrial mill at the time.

The "C. W. Lindemann" watermill was converted from waterwheel to turbine drive, the mill technology is still in place. It was still in use until 2003. Today, a turbine is used to generate electricity from water power. The Stemmen watermill is a technical monument and can be visited.
