The local history museum is located in a former doctor's surgery and displays exhibits from life and work around 100 years ago: For example, the furnishings of a pharmacy, an old classroom or historical finds from the surrounding area.
Special exhibition: The strangler returns!
"At this spot, on August 27, 1948, the "Strangler of Lichtenmoor" was shot by the farmer Hermann Gaatz." This is what is written on the memorial stone in the Schotenheide between Lichtenhorst and Eilte, just a few meters from the border between the Nienburg/Weser district and the Heidekreis. The "Würger vom Lichtenmoor" was a male wolf of considerable size and had "struck" terribly among the cows and sheep in the weeks before. It is said to have killed more than 100 sheep, 65 head of cattle and lots of game between May and that date in August. The taxidermied head of the mighty wolf is on display in the Rodewald local history museum. The raised ears and pointed fangs give an idea of the "strangler's" aggression and dangerous nature. The special exhibition "Bloodthirsty monster or natural predator - legend or reality?" provides information about the history of the strangler and shows how effective it was. It also sheds light on the lives of its conspecifics, which have now returned to the Lichtenmoor.
