However, this is not a naturally formed hill, but rather the former Nienburg/Krähe central landfill. After the landfill ceased operations, the approximately 6.5-hectare site was extensively reclaimed and redesigned by the BAWN. The so-called landfill body is sealed on all sides. Wild herbs were planted in certain areas, and the surface was contoured.

The entire area is accessible via a specially constructed, 1.2-kilometer-long hiking trail open to the public. Along the trail, informational signs explain waste management in the Nienburg/Weser district. A four-meter-high summit cross marks the town’s highest point. From the ridge’s summit, visitors are treated to a view of the Middle Weser Valley that is unique in its kind. A pavilion for visitors is also located on the mountain’s ridge.

To keep the vegetation short, a flock of sheep grazes on the Kräher Höhe during the summer months. The area, which is integrated into the surrounding forest, is used in particular by cyclists, Nordic walkers, school groups, and hikers.
Commissioned by the BAWN, local artist Holger “Pablo” Hirndorf has created a sculpture intended to serve as a distinctive feature on the Kräher Höhe: “Gipfelblick” (Summit View), shaped like a stylized eye, emphasizes the connection between the sky and the Kräher Höhe through its vertical orientation. At the same time, the sculpture offers a “view through” that is unique in its form, yet—as indicated by the slightly lowered position of the iris—it is not aimlessly directed into the distance: the viewer keeps the county seat in view. Tip: Play disc golf on the landfill mound. Several baskets are available.
