- Start: The circular route can be started at any point.
Cycling is one of the most popular ways to explore the Steinhuder Meer holiday region, alongside swimming and sailing. The Steinhuder Meer Rundweg is a beautifully developed circular route stretching roughly 32 kilometres around the largest lake in northwestern Germany. It links a wealth of cultural sights with the stunning diversity of lakeside landscapes, making it easy to spend a full day discovering the area’s natural beauty both on and off the path. The trail takes cyclists and walkers through a changing tapestry of scenery that encircles the vast lake like a sparkling gem. The shoreline constantly transforms in character—sometimes lined with trees dipping their branches into the water, sometimes framed by dense reeds or edged by a gentle dune that gives way to fine sand. Shady woodland transitions into open wet meadows, while well-kept trails invite travellers to take their time and absorb the tranquil surroundings. Further along the route, the trail passes through an alder swamp forest that feels almost primeval—a sanctuary for songbirds and waterfowl. Wooden boardwalks allow visitors to step quietly into this serene world without disturbing its delicate balance. Whether on foot or by bike, the Steinhuder Meer Rundweg offers an unforgettable journey through one of Lower Saxony’s most beautiful natural landscapes, combining relaxation, active exploration and authentic connections to nature.
