Cycle tour along the Große Aue from its source at Rhödinghausen to its mouth at Binnen.
With this connecting line between the district of Herford, the western district of Minden-Lübbecke and the Weser in the district of Nienburg, you can experience in a fascinating way how the Große Aue has developed from a small stream into a respectable river over a length of 88 kilometers. Wonderful scenery with beautiful places and lots of history lie along the way. The cycle path starts at the parking lot on the grounds of the Ellerburg castle on the edge of the village of Fiestel, which belongs to the East Westphalian town of Espelkamp in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The starting point at the Ellerburg castle was chosen because this was an important crossing point over the floodplain meadows in history. In addition, the water level of the Große Aue ultimately led to the dismantling of the Ellerburg. The first section runs from Ellerburg to the north-east to where the Große Aue flows into the Weser at Binnen in the Liebenau joint municipality. It is 110 kilometers long and crosses the Große Aue 20 times. In order to provide transport links and parking facilities, it continues to the Schweizerlust hotel/restaurant in Liebenau. The second part leads south from Ellerburg to the source of the Aue to Dono (Rödinghausen) on the south side of the Wiehengebirge. It is 23.5 kilometers long and crosses the Große Aue 5 times. In order to provide transport connections and parking facilities, it continues to the bus station in Rödinghausen (approx. 4 kilometers).

The Große Aue is 88 kilometers long and the third largest left tributary of the Weser after the Hunte and Diemel. It has its source at an altitude of 118 meters above sea level on the south side of the Wiehengebirge in the Dono district of Rödinghausen and flows into the Weser below Liebenau halfway to Nienburg near Binnen. Cyclists ride mainly on flat agricultural paths alternating on both sides of the river through partly unspoilt landscapes characterized by meadows, forests, agriculture, asparagus fields, lakes, farms, mills and manor houses. The Ellerburg - Aue cycle path crosses several designated cycle paths, such as the Weser cycle path, so that longer circular tours and multi-day tours are also possible. The cycle path is not signposted. The tours are digitally recorded in the Teutonavigator and in Komoot . A free leaflet is available in the town halls along the way. There are 11 day tours along and on the Ellerburg-Aue cycle path, including 9 circular tours.
