The sandstone pilgrim's memorial was inaugurated in connection with the EXPO 2000 world exhibition on July 4, 2000. In the same year, the Volkenroda-Loccum pilgrimage route (approx. 350 kilometers) was inaugurated.
Seven pillars symbolize a wheel: three pillars and half of the ring are placed in Loccum, four with the other half of the ring in Volkenroda, the mother monastery of Loccum in Thuringia. The parts of the sculpture in both places mark the "Ecological Youth Pilgrimage 2000" between Volkenroda and Hanover. The sculpture stands for past, present and future.
