The name Sachsenhain refers to the Blood Court of Verden in 782, in which the Frankish King Charles (later: Charlemagne) allegedly had 4500 pagan Saxons executed "where the Aller flows into the Weser". There are no detailed records of this event, which is why all the more myths, legends and adventurous interpretations surround the so-called "Verden Blood Court".

After the Second World War, displaced persons were initially housed in the buildings. Today, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover runs the Evangelical Youth Center Sachsenhain there.
