It was built in the middle of the 19th century to facilitate the removal of cut peat from the Verden moor to Verden and the marshland villages.
Trees up to 100 years old line the road on both sides. It was awarded the title "Avenue of the Year 2015" by the Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz (BUND).
In March 2019, the Lower Saxony Heritage Association (NHB) added the "Avenue of the Month" award.
