In 1976, plans were announced for the construction of an underground nuclear waste repository in the salt dome under the Lichtenmoor. A reprocessing plant for nuclear fuel was also to be built. A "citizens' initiative against the Lichtenmoor nuclear waste repository" ultimately prevented the project through various protest actions and occupations of the planned drilling site for the exploratory borehole. In some cases, several hundred people took part in the protests.
