In the forest to the east of Heemsen lies Brunsburg Castle, a large early medieval rampart complex, probably dating from the time of the wars between the Franks and Saxons. The builders erected the castle strategically on a small ridge that juts out into the boggy forest like a peninsula. Surrounded on three sides by moorland and streams, the Brunsburg could only be reached from the south side, which is why an additional rampart secured the castle. The ramparts are almost all very well preserved and are still of considerable size today.
The castle complex, built around the 9th century, is divided into a bailey and a main castle. Excavations were carried out in the triangular main castle; panels provide information about the finds. No excavations have yet been carried out in the outer bailey. According to legend, a treasure, an old war chest, is hidden in Brunsburg Castle. The forest in which the Brunsburg is located, the so-called Sündern, is ideal for walks. The approach is from Heemsen in the direction of Steimbke, then please follow the signs.
