After the last ice age, large parts of the North German Plain developed into moors due to the high groundwater levels. Extensive raised bogs are among the outstanding landscape features of the southern Mittelweser region (Großes Moor Uchte, Hohes Moor near Steyerberg, Rehburger Moor, Lichtenmoor). In the core area, peat is still extracted industrially on a large scale.
However, large areas have already been returned to nature. Cotton grass fruits in April, peat mosses grow on stored water, the rare golden plover breeds here and the crane calls in the early morning mist. The Große Uchter Moor is part of the Diepholzer Moorniederung nature reserve. Originally, the peat layer in the Uchter Moor was up to 6.50 meters thick.
Peat extraction began as early as the 1930s, initially by hand to produce fuel. Industrial peat extraction was intensified with mechanical cutting and milling, especially after the Second World War. The end of industrial use is not expected before 2030. Step by step, all peat extraction areas must be rewetted in accordance with the Lower Saxony Moor Protection Program and thus returned to natural regeneration. The Uchter Moor is part of the "European bird sanctuary Diepholzer Moorniederung".
Tips: Uchter Moor moor train and Warmsen birdwatching tower. Cranes can be observed from the viewing platform in the fall.
