Model of the former Nienburg Castle on today's Schlossplatz. Idea and builder Wolfgang Maaß. Today, only the stock tower remains of the former complex.
Nienburg Castle was originally a square fortification built in the late Middle Ages. The Counts of Hoya resided here. They expanded the castle into a Renaissance fortress in the 16th century. The Counts of Hoya died out in 1582. The castle became the seat of the Drosten. After the Thirty Years' War, the buildings were demolished except for the tower. The stones were used to extend the town fortifications. The castle moat was filled in. The tower was used as a prison. The prisoners lay in the stocks - hence the current name "Stockturm". The appearance of the tower still corresponds to that of the late 17th century.
