The Lichtenmoor is a degenerated raised bog measuring around 10 x 10 km between Heemsen and Steimbke. The peat-covered moor areas are partly used for agriculture. Inside, there is a nature reserve covering around 240 hectares, as the Lichtenmoor is an important breeding and resting area for birds (including cranes).
A large wolf is known as the "Würger vom Lichtenmoor", which is said to have killed numerous domestic and wild animals around the Lichtenmoor in 1948. There is an exhibition about the "strangler" in the Rodewald local history museum.
