Museum
The Lapidarium in the Nienburg Museum Garden is a collection of carved sandstones.
These stones from nine centuries ago, at least until the 19th century, usually arrived in Nienburg by Weser ship from the Bückeberge mountains near Obernkirchen. The blanks were carved according to the order, i.e. provided with writing and artistic decoration. The work was carried out by the stonemasons. It is an extraordinary collection of over 80 sandstones, all of which come from the town of Nienburg/Weser and the Middle Weser region. These include several baptismal fonts, gravestones, sandstones from bourgeois and aristocratic building owners, a milestone, a boundary stone, a 14th century atonement cross, baroque figures from the former Linsburg castle, sundials, gable ornaments, a fireplace, etc.

A complete bay window from the Renaissance period (a so-called Utlucht) was also built. It once stood in Nienburg's town center. All stones are provided with informative texts. The roofed lapidarium is designed as a modern functional building and protects the stones from the rain. In the lower part of the lapidarium there are fixed seating areas that invite visitors to linger. The Nienburg Lapidarium can be considered unique in northern Germany.
